Kamala Harris an "African American" ? Was not Mississippi Masala about a black man seeking a pseudo white in the form of an Indian woman?

Australia's ABC and others I am sure are describing Democrat Vice President nominee Kamala Harris as an African American. She is in fact part Indian and part Jamaican .
That heritage reminds this writer of Mira Nair's 1992 production, Mississippi Masala which starred Denzel Washington Jr.
Washington played the part of an African American in an interracial relationship with an Indian woman. This writer can recall commentary at the time which described the movie aa a depiction of African men who seek Indian women as a substitute for the white women they prefer.
It does seem as if Joe Biden has also made that sort of choice.
