This year, YWB has run the highest number of projects. Here is a brief summary: Spark allowed 26 participants to participate in an engineering workshop Surge this was expanded in 2016. This year there were 13 YWB members organising the event. Expand enables students to work with culturally and linguistically diverse communities. There are youths in PNG working on the project. Stride the participants young migrant women who have arrived in Australia for 0 to 5 years. 28 women participated at the Gold Coast this year. 13 YWB members attended. Further summary points for 2016: 2 new projects 42% increase in active volunteers 15% increase in revenue near doubling of membership to 800 25,000 hours of volunteer work which equates to 13 full time employees The major program and activity that YWB conducts is the ‘Spark Engineering Camp’ (the Camp). The Camp provides students from grades 10-12 with the opportunity to see what the university experience, particularly engineering, can provide. The Camp is directed towards students who come from Indigenous, refugee and/or financially or otherwise disadvantaged backgrounds and is run over a two week period in Brisbane and Melbourne. The purpose of the Camp is to provide the students with an insight into the life they could be involved in should they pursue tertiary education, with a particular focus on engineering. YWB provides activities to the students including workshops and excursions in order to provide them with exposure to the breadth of engineering and the role engineers play in society. Further education such as university courses may be unfamiliar or foreign to the students and the Camp provides the students with an understanding about what future study could be like.
