Barclays Asian hiring under scrutiny ;meanwhile the matter of Maxine McKew remains a mystery.......
by Ganesh Sahathevan
Maxine McKew is best known for unseating the then prime minister John Howard, Her Labor Government is not a friend of bankers, or so it seems.
In March this year Margot Patrick of the Wall Street Journal reported:
Barclays PLC (has become) the latest bank to disclose that U.S. authorities are investigating its hiring practices in Asia, part of a wider probe into banks’ recruitment of friends and family members of government officials and top executives in the region.
The WSJ story brings to mind Barclays appointing the Australian newsreader Maxine McKew to its Asia Pacific Advisory Committee in 200.As one can see from the list of those appointed, McKew's curriculum vitae was distinguished by her lack of skills and experience in finance or economics as well as a glaring lack of standing among what one publication described as "a panel full of big names".
A cursory examination of the names on the panel , provided by Barclays when it announced the appointment of Hong Kong's Anson Chan proves the point:
The Barclays Asia Pacific Advisory Committee consists of the following-
Dr the Hon Anson Chan, GBM, GCMG, CBE, JP, former Chief Secretary of Administration for the Hong Kong Administrative Region
Dr Richard Hu, former Cabinet Minister and Chairman of MAS, current Chairman of CapitaLand, Singapore
Mr Piyush Mankad, former Finance Secretary, Government of India
Rt Hon Francis Maude, British MP and former Conservative Minister
Ms Maxine McKew, award-winning journalist and political analyst, Australia
Dr Han Seung Soo former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minster of Korea
Mr Yutaka Yamaguchi, former Deputy Governor, Bank of Japan
Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Managing Director YTL, Malaysia
Sir Peter Middleton, Chairman of Barclays Asia Pacific Advisory Committee and former Chairman of Barclays PLC
Mr Robert Morrice, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Barclays Asia Pacific
Sir David Wright, Executive Director of Barclays Asia Pacific Advisory Committee and Vice Chairman, Barclays Capital
While Mckew was a one-term Labor MP ,that came after her appointment to the Barclays panel. As for being an "award winning journalist", Barclays would have been more than aware from its many years of experience in Asia that journalists do not rank too highly in Asia where status matters. In fact, journalists rank very near the bottom.
McKew's appointment remains a mystery bu did it have something to do with her connections within the Labor Party, who she represented in the 2007 election that brought it to power?
